Last night was our first night of our month long project in the streets and bars. It was a Tuesday night and the streets were packed with old over weight men walking with beautiful young women some even just girls.
We met a sweet and funny young girl called Jenny. We went to her bar where there was a rowdy group of Koreans. They were being entertained by a variety show on stage and dancing with shy young girls who worked in the bar.
My fellow misfit missionary Bekah decided we needed to sing a song on stage. She requested for us to sing “Jesus take the Wheel”. The variety show women pulled us on stage and queued the music. It was slow going at first but then the line in the song came that says ” I’m letting go!”. I just started belting out “Jesus take the wheel!” and the girls in the bar started cheering. Something broke in the atmosphere and the air waves were now being filled with praise to Jesus.
It was the perfect beginning to our time here. It broke off any fear of rejection or timidity. It brought a kingdom perspective as well. The Kingdom of God flips every thing upside down. We stand on stage to praise Jesus not to please men, we recruit women to freedom not to sexual bondage, we pay for girls time to gain trust not to betray them.
On the jeepney ride home a group of high school ages girls got on board with us. They remembered us from our visit to their neighborhood in January when we brought food to the shanties in the slums. They were coming home from working on the streets, these sweet teenage girls, they do not want to be doing this, their eyes were so sad. I see hope though, I see them at the getaway bringing all their friends. I see them getting free. Please pray!
